Karen Jungblut, Director of Global Initiatives, USC Shoah Foundation – The Institute for Visual History and Education, University of Southern California Dipl.-Pol. (Freie Universität Berlin) With the USC Shoah Foundation since 1996, Karen led an international and multilingual staff to successfully index the archive of 55,000 video testimonies of Holocaust survivors and witnesses, developed and implemented methodologies to index newly added video testimonies of other genocide and mass violence. Working with partners around the world, she led the collection and integration of testimonies from survivors and witnesses of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, the Cambodian Genocide of the 1970s, the Armenian genocide, Guatemalan Genocide, the 1937 Nanjing Massacre. Guided by a reflective and reflexive approach to her work, Karen’s focus for the last few years include the documentation of more current events such as efforts documenting personal stories about contemporary experiences with violent or virulent antisemitism, as well as experiences of genocidal violence in a number of areas. These efforts include the recent crisis of the Rohingya community in Myanmar. Having visited the refugee camps in Bangladesh several times since November 2017, she led a documentation effort with Rohingya survivors who had to flee the genocidal violence in Myanmar.
