All obligations in front of the needs are clear,\u201d said Gianni Tognoni, the secretary general of the Permanent Peoples\u2019 Tribunal (PPT).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He welcomed the U.S. House of Representatives\u2019 recent vote on Rohingya genocide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The U.S. House of Representatives approved a resolution by a vote of 394-1 on Dec. 14 affirming \u201cthe Burmese military\u2019s actions were genocide against the Rohingya people.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier this year, a UN fact-finding mission on Myanmar also found the military guilty of genocide and crimes against humanity including rape, gang rape, sexual slavery, forced nudity, mutilations, torture, persecution, and enslavement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The U.S. lower house\u2019s decision \u201cis definitely an event which must be hailed as a potentially critical step forward in the political, even more than in juridical sense in the international scenario,\u201d Tognoni said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAll words have been said,\u201d he said and called on the U.S. and other global actors should act for the resolution of the crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He termed the role of the International Criminal Court as \u201cvery significant and mandatory\u201d in this regard.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said all political groups \u201cwho have recognized the gravity of the sufferings, and are therefore perfectly aware of what could and should be done now [\u2026] could find an agreement to act.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>International organizations such as European Union, ASEAN, OIC, as well as nations \u201cmust translate their awareness and obligations into concrete plans\u201d, Tognoni added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Any delay to take global action against the \u201cbrutality\u201d in Myanmar, where \u201cthe process of genocide is ongoing,\u201d must be considered as \u201cexpression of impunity\u201d as well as \u201can aggravation of the intolerable sufferings, which all the field missions in the concerned areas have documented,\u201d the head of the rights group said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8216;Critical test&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are facing a critical test which has global implications. Do human and people\u2019s rights have a place, beyond the declaration of principles?\u201d Tognoni questioned, admitting that taking such a decision \u201cis not easy for economic, and political interests and geopolitical equilibria.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He mentioned that the PPT had gave a verdict during its Kuala Lumpur session in September 2017 that the attacks on Rohingya in Myanmar was a \u201cmassacre\u201d, \u201ctragic violations of fundamental rights\u201d, and a \u201cgenocide.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some global actors, including the U.S., was reluctant to acknowledge the attacks on Rohingya as a \u201cgenocide\u201d because of political reasons, he underlined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tognoni expressed hope that \u201cmost urgent\u201d measured will be taken in order to assure the protection of the Rohingya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Rohingya, described by the UN as the world&#8217;s most persecuted people, have faced heightened fears of attack since dozens were killed in communal violence in 2012.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Amnesty International, more than 750,000 Rohingya refugees, mostly women and children, have fled Myanmar and crossed into Bangladesh after Myanmar forces launched a crackdown on the minority Muslim community in August last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since Aug. 25, 2017, nearly 24,000 Rohingya Muslims have been killed by Myanmar\u2019s state forces, according to a report by the Ontario International Development Agency (OIDA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 34,000 Rohingya were also thrown into fires, while over 114,000 others were beaten, said the OIDA report, titled &#8220;Forced Migration of Rohingya: The Untold Experience.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some 18,000 Rohingya women and girls were raped by Myanmar\u2019s army and police and over 115,000 Rohingya homes were burned down and 113,000 others vandalized, it added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The UN has also documented mass gang rapes, killings &#8212; including of infants and young children &#8212; brutal beatings and disappearances committed by Myanmar state forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a report, UN investigators said such violations may have constituted crimes against humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"539\" height=\"142\" src=\"https:\/\/freerohingyacoalition.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/tognoni1-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1296\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freerohingyacoalition.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/tognoni1-2.jpg 539w, https:\/\/freerohingyacoalition.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/tognoni1-2-300x79.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 539px) 100vw, 539px\" \/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>International community should act for resolution of Rohingya crisis, says head of Rome-based rights group By\u00a0Sorwar Alam | Published by Anadolu Agency on December 19, 2018 ANKARA\u00a0&#8212; The international community <\/p>\n<div class=\"read-more-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/freerohingyacoalition.org\/en\/concrete-plans-demanded-for-rohingya-crisis-resolution\/\" class=\"read-more\">continue reading<\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":1297,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_mbp_gutenberg_autopost":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[11],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1295","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-in-the-news"],"rise-blocks_total_comments":2,"rise-blocks_categories":[{"term_id":11,"name":"In the News","slug":"in-the-news","term_group":0,"term_taxonomy_id":11,"taxonomy":"category","description":"","parent":0,"count":136,"filter":"raw","cat_ID":11,"category_count":136,"category_description":"","cat_name":"In the News","category_nicename":"in-the-news","category_parent":0}],"rise-blocks_excerpt":"International community should act for resolution of Rohingya crisis, says head of Rome-based rights group By\u00a0Sorwar Alam | Published by Anadolu Agency on December 19, 2018 ANKARA\u00a0&#8212; The international community should put forward concrete plans to resolve the Rohingya crisis, head of a Rome-based human rights group said. \u201cAll evidence on what to be done are available.
